This pendant features a rare Paraiba tourmaline crystal. The stone measures 1.14 x 0.52 inches (29.0 x 13.3 mm) and weighs in at 43.7 carats. Paraiba tourmaline is a variety of tourmaline given vivid color by the presence of copper. This variety has been found in Nigeria and Mozambique, but as the name suggests the original find was in Paraiba state, Brazil. These stones showed an unusual range of colors, including rich'windex' blue and a glowing purple-violet. Since then they have become one of the rarest and most desirable gems on the market. This stone is a rare crystal from the original find in Brazil. Though faceting material has been found in Africa, full crystals have only been found in Brazil. I was very lucky to get a few from an old parcel, as production is virtually nonexistent today. This stone shows a rare purple color, with a bluer violet-purple at the top and a redder pink-purple at the bottom, split by a band of pink. I have never seen a tourmaline anything like this from any other deposit!
